Politicians and Their Delinquent Non-Profits
By law, non-profit organizations in Jamaica are required to file annual returns at the Companies Office listing the address of the registered office and details of the current directors.
By law, they’re also required to file audited financials, containing the last balance sheet and a profit and loss account statement.
However, some of these non-profits aren’t fulfilling these requirements.
And a number of those delinquent on their filings are linked to members of parliament and senators - the persons who make the laws!
Starting the first week of January 2023, 18º North will be revealing the politicians whose foundations are listed as being behind on their non-profit filings and spotlight gaps in monitoring by state agencies that have created opportunities for politicians to circumvent these transparency rules.
We’ll also raise the question of whether these non-profits are purely charitable in nature, as their names would seem to suggest, or whether some could also be loopholes that allow campaign financing and other activities to go unchecked.
It’s a series you won’t see anywhere else but here at 18º North.
