McLean's Independence Questioned Amid Business Links With CMU-Employed Husband

What the Auditor General's report did not cover

It’s around 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2020.

An unmarked cream and brown coaster bus pulls up at the side of a two-storey residence in the Almaville Estate community in Bull Bay, St. Andrew.

It waits about 20 minutes before its first passenger loads.

Soon, other uniformed persons emerge from the same residence and board the bus.

Their final destination is Caribbean Maritime University, (CMU), about seven miles away. 

Unlike some other CMU students living in the area who must get themselves to and from school or to the central pickup point at the Harbour View Roundabout, these are among a select group who can get door-to-door service both ways every weekday. One of them explained it’s a “courtesy” for which he doesn’t pay anything extra outside of his US$300 rent each month.

Property records show that the premises from where these CMU students get picked up is owned by the Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education Youth and Information, (MOEYI), Dr. Grace McLean, along with her husband Eron McLean, who is CMU Vice President, University Advancement and Development.
